Classes are taught by Terri Compost, organic gardener, naturalist and BASIL activist.She has been studying local plants and nature for over 15 years and loves to share her fascination and knowledge with others. Her areas of interest include native, edible and medicinal plants, birds and stars.

Plant Walk in People’s Park

Learn about the history of this interesting garden. Explore the edible, medicinal and native plants growing here. Terri has been gardening in People’s Park for over 10 years. This class is part of the Barrington Collective DIY (Do It Yourself ) all day teaching fest in People’s Park. Check it out.

Seed Saving Workshop

BASILEcology CenterIntroduction to seed saving for the backyard, school, and community gardener. Learn about the importance of saving our own seed. Find out when and how to harvest seeds from your garden and discover a good way to keep and improve your favorite vegetable varieties year after year. Learn which plants are easiest to start with, and for more advanced seed savers, share and learn new techniques. We’ll cover seed saving in detail, including botany and pollination, types of seeds (heirlooms, hybrids, open-pollinated), wet and dry seed processing methods, equipment, and seed storage. Also, learn about BASIL, the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library. Bring some unprocessed seeds to clean. Stop buying seed from multinational corporations and foster some biodiversity of your own!

Urban Weed Walk

Ecology CenterLearn about the Edible and Medicinal uses of common weeds as Terri Compost leads a walk exploring the neighborhood around the Ecology Center. Discover the treasure of an overgrown lot, ripe with wild foods, information about the soil, and medicines. Share information about the gifts of these often unwanted common volunteer plants. Terri has been harvesting "weeds" for over 10 years.

Native Plant Walk in Strawberry Canyon

Bike up to a beautiful path through Strawberry Canyon and meet plants where they live. This easy walk will take about 2 hours. Special attention to Native Plants and Wild Foods. Bring a snack to share. Rain cancels.

: Meet at 11:30 am in People’s Park to bike up together (a not too strenuous uphill ride less than a mile).Or meet us at 12:00 noon in the parking lot of the Strawberry Canyon Fire Trail Head below the UC Botanical Gardens on Centennial Drive.
